Youngest Speller EVER to Advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee

Never underestimate anyone younger than you. Sriram Hathwar used to hold the record of being the youngest speller at the Scripps National Spelling Bee when he was eight (second grade), but someone younger has made it to nationals this year: Lori Anne Madison (only six-years-old and in the second grade). She also competed last year (I assume it was when she was five). That was even before I began studying for the National Spelling Bee!

  1. Wow! Our school district doesn't even want us to compete in fourth grade! Well, at least I got 4th in the state twice as old as her! (I celebrated my 12th birthday by winning the district spelling bee) I hope she makes it to the semifinals. It's already a big accomplishment to make it so far at age six.

  2. Both Sriram Hathwar and Rahul Malayappan were 8 years old when they both competed in the Scripps Nationals. The title was NOT just for Sriram to hold.

    1. True, but Sriram was still the younger speller. And Sriram was only a second grader, while Rahul was already a fourth grader. Both had accomplished a lot, but Sriram's achievement LOOKS more impressive, whether it was or not. It depends on how competitve their regional bees were. Excellent point, though.
